Warcraft battle pets guide : weather conditions

Environmental and Weather Condition Buffs/debuffs

Weather buffs generally last 5 or 9 rounds (unless replaced) and have a 5 turn cooldown. They have a 100% chance for the attack element to hit, but can be countered by abilities such as Dodge, Bubble or Submerge. Some benefit specific attack types, such as Arcane, for their duration. Can have either a beneficial or a detrimental affect on teams, depending on the passive abilities of their respective families.

Note that Elemental pets are not affected by the weather conditions.

Sunnny Day

During a sunny day, the maximum health of all pets is increased by 50%. and healing done is increased by 25%.

Use with caution as Sunny Day affects both teams passive abilities:
Buffs Beasts, Dragonkin and Mechanical and humanoids
Nerfs Flying and Magic pets
(There is a Good comment by sirinad on Wowhead about this).

Sunlight: A Solar Beam strikes all enemies, dealing Elemental damage and transforms the weather into a sunny day for 9 rounds.

Sunlight, an elemental attack, is best used against Mechanical pets and can be cast by the following :

Flying : Golden Dawnfeather, Firewing,
Dragonkin : Soul of the Aspects
Beast: Sunfur Panda

Illuminate, a magic attack, is best used again Flying pets and can only be cast by Enchanted, Festival and Lunar Lanterns. Note that this spell works against the Lanterns passive abilities!

During Darkness, all pets are considered Blinded and all healing received is reduced by 50%. Accuracy is reduced by 10%.
Some attacks strongly benefit from this, i.e. Light does double damage. (Cast by Lanterns)

Call Darkness A shadow falls across the battlefield, dealing Humanoid damage and turning the weather to Darkness for 5 rounds.

Best against dragon kin, worst again beast. Wowhead list a number of pets with this attack.

The following attacks benefit from Darkness and being Blinded:

Fury of 1,000 Fists (100% chance to stun for 1 round, if

During a Lightning Storm, ALL pets deal bonus Mechanical damage on each attack and Mechanical abilities deal 25% additional damage.

Call Lightning : Deals Mechanical damage and causes a Lightning Storm for 5 rounds. (5 Turn Cooldown. 100% Hit Chance)

Needless to say, if you are battling against a Legendary beast(s), this can turn the tables. If your team includes beasts though, you just nerfed yourself.

Those that can call this storm include:

Aquatic : Hydraling
Dragonkin Hatchlings : Thundering Serpent, Wild Gold and Wild Jade
Elemental : Tiny Twister
Flying : Dragon Kite, Skywisp Moth
Mechanical : Sunreaver Micro-Sentry, Tranquil Mechanical Yeti

Scorched Earth

During Scorched Earth, all pets count as Burning.

Scorches the ground, dealing Dragonkin damage to target and Dragonkin damage to ALL active pets each round for 9 rounds. (3 Turn Cooldown, 100% Hit Chance)

The attack is great verses Magic opponents, while the addition burning can hammer Mechanicals.

Elemental : Cinder Kitten, Fel Flame, Ominous Flame, Searing Scorchling, Spirit of Summer

Similarly, there is :

So particularly nasty for Mechanicals

Immolate (16 pets, mostly Elemental) and Fel Immolate (Pocket Reaver, Sunreaver Micro-Sentry, Gusting Grimoire) cause burning and Elemental damage to a single target.

Flame Breath acts in the same way, but causes Dragonkin damage and burning.

Abilities that can greatly benefit from burning targets are :

During a Blizzard, all pets are considered Chilled.

Call Blizzard : Deals Elemental damage and causes a Blizzard for 9 rounds. Deals additional damage against targets already Chilled. 3 Turn Cooldown, 100% Hit Chance.

Don’t rate it myself, but useful against Mechanicals

Elementals with this : Only Tiny Snowman

Other pets with this :

Beast : Baby Blizzard Bear, Poley and Snowy Panda
Humanoid : Father Winter’s Helper, Rotten Little Helper and Winters’ Little Helper
Mechanical : Tranquil Mechanical Yeti
Undead : Frosty

These abilities are enhanced by the Chilled effect
Deep Freeze (Chance to stun increased from 25% to 100%)
Howling Blast (Additional damage to enemy team if they are affected)
Ice Lance (Additional damage to a Chilled target)

Chilled can also be caused by Frost Nova, Frost Shock and Slippery Ice.

Cleansing Rain

During a cleansing rain, the duration of hostile damage over time effects is reduced by 1 round and Aquatic abilities deal 25% more damage.

Acid Rain
Poisons the clouds with acid, dealing Aquatic damage to all enemies. The acid quickly disperses and calls down a cleansing rain for 9 rounds. 3 Turn Cooldown

Only castable by Droplet of Y’Shaarj, Crazy Carrot and Jademist Dancer. Combined with aquatic abilities and double damage from Howl or Blindness still is lethal against Elemental teams.

Cleansing Rain : Restores health to your team and calls down a cleansing rain for 9 rounds. 3 Turn Cooldown

Can be cast by a number of frogs, toads, carp, water skimmers and others. Wowhead list 30 available pets with this abilitity, mostly Aquatic, which it where you’d want it anyway.
Syd the Squid (Magic) and Lifelike Toad (Mechanical) also have it.

Muddy weather prevents any pet that enters the battlefield from swapping out for 3 rounds.

Calls down a mudslide, dealing Critter damage and causing muddy weather for 9 rounds.

Undecided about the usefulness of this, but included for completeness. I dare say there is the odd fight were if would be useful. Still, Howl plus Mudslide itself would do hefty damage to any Critter

Pets with this :

Aquatic : Gulp Froglet, Mud Jumper
Beast : Mountain Panda, Sumprush Rodent
Elemental : Pandaren Earth Spirit, Skunky Alemental
