Also in print, this was the day, in 1907, that Rudyard Kipling was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. It was also the first time it had been bestowed on an English writer.
Staying with Nobel prizes, and it’s start in 1901, the first Nobel Peace Prizes were awarded to Jean Henri Dunant, together with Frederic Passy from a special fund created by inventor Alfred Nobel to award those who "have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind."
At the same time, the first Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to Wilhelm Röntgen for his discovery of X-rays.
Two years later, 1903, the Nobel prize for physics went to Pierre and Marie Curie
This one surprised me, that’s a heck of a long flight even now! In 1919 two Australian brothers, Captain Ross Smith and Lieutenant Keith Smith, became the first aviators to fly from Britain to Australia.
