« Multi-player online games »
Introduction
I've actually played online games for several years, filling British Telecom's coffer with their extortionate per second billing for daring to connect to the Internet. Of course the world's move on and most of us are lucky enough to have all we can eat broadband.
Hardly surprising then that massive multiplayer games are getting ever more popular. Personally I'm still happy with text based MultiUser Dungeons, though I did spend altogether to much time on Blizzards Battlenet. I would like to play the World of Warcraft, but I simply can't afford the time to get addicted to the game.
All being well, later this year 'Dungeons & Dragonline Online' will be released. I'm hoping by them this years extensive updates for the websites are done and I can spend a few months myself in a world of elves, dwarves and monsters.
Anyway, I'll expand this section when I get chance.
What is a MMOG?
Online games, LAN and Internet have been around for decades in one for or another. I still play text MUD's myself even now. In these days of even faster computers and broadband, things are getting truly massive!
MMOG - Massively Multiplayer online game - as a genre.
MMORPG - Massively Multiplayer Role Playing Games - ie Asheron's Call and Everquest
MMORTS - Massively Multiplayer Real Time Strategy - ie Starcraft
MMOFPS - Massively Multiplayer First Personal shooter games - ie Quake, Unreal
Basically, MMOG are games that can, and for the largest, do have thousands on real people playing together at any one time.
A truly great website I've found that far eclipses my aging effort is : [ www.mmoworlds.com ] MMO Worlds (Down May 2005)
